ARTISTS-IN-RESIDENCE PROGRAM Artists in Residence (AIR) refers to a grant program offered to Arizona K-12 schools by the Arizona Commission on the Arts (ACA) for the purpose of fostering intensive arts experiences in the classroom through resident artists. Scottsdale schools are fortunate to have additional funding available from the district (up to $1800 in matching funds) for schools that have a grant accepted by the Arts Commission. Scottsdale schools that have 50% or more students residing in Phoenix city limits can also apply for a grant with the Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture. The AZ Commission has a roster of suggested artists and their backgrounds on its website. Schools can also select artists not on the roster but the artist must be approved by the Commission prior to the grant application process. Artistic disciplines include creative writing, dance, folk arts (performing and visual), folklorists, music, theater, visual and interdisciplinary arts. There are also Project Grants available through the ACA. For full information on the grants available, visit their website. 2009-10 SUSD Residency Grant awards can be seen here, as well as 2007-08, 2006-07, and 2005-06. Be sure to determine your project with input from principals, teachers and staff, then contact the artist directly to make sure she or he is available. The artist may have valuable insight into the Residency to improve your grant application. The Arts in Education Council will keep you informed of the many opportunities to interact with ACA representatives, such as stART, Arts Congress and SWAC, the Southwest Arts Conference. |
