2009-2010 ES Performances

The Arts In Education Council for Scottsdale Schools is pleased to offer school performances at all our Elementary School locations and Sierra Vista from the following selection of company artists.  More information about the artists can be found at their noted websites and Arizona Commission on the Arts Roster pages.

Childsplay www.childsplayaz.org, or ACA Roster page hereChildsplay has been touring to Arizona's schools since 1977 and the school tour program remains the cornerstone of the company today. Sets and costumes, sound equipment and actors pack in to a van and come to your school site.  Upcoming performances:  Ferdinand the Bull, Sept. to Dec.  Androcles and the Lion, Nov. to May.  Lecture/Demonstration available after each performance.

Saxophobia - www.saxophobia.net  Students will be introduced to an eclectic mix of rare saxophones. Some of their favorites will be the curved sopranino (the smallest ever made at eleven inches in height) and the contrabass sax (at six-and-one-half feet in height, the largest ever made). They will recognize such melodies as The Pink Panther Theme and Yakety Sax and hear the blues as performed by Lisa on the animated TV show, The Simpsons. Students will be exposed to several different jazz styles including dixieland, the blues, and swing.

Operatunity www.showcaseconcerts.com, or ACA Roster Page here.  In opera, people die, boyfriends cheat, women cry, and yet we find a way to sing! Laughter is indeed the best medicine, but it is also a terrific teacher, especially for people who think they hate opera. Our singers lead each group through operatic terminology and traditions, taking them to levels of understanding and even appreciation. With our trunk full of beautiful melodies, and clever shtick we'll make it happen! Our programs are interactive, and improvisational. Call us in-your-face-opera. Study Guide

Fushicho Daiko www.taikoaz.com, or ACA Roster Page here"Phoenix Taiko Drummers" Taiko is the ancient art of drumming, Japanese style. The drums are big and powerful, or small and riveting. The drummers are awesome. Fushicho Daiko Director, Esther Vandecar, lived, studied, performed, and taught taiko in Japan for 7 years. She brought this art form back to her native country to share with anyone with passion for a challenge. Esther formed Fushicho Daiko in 1992, and their student groups, have been wowing audiences ever since.

EPIK www.epikdanceco.org, or ACA Roster Page hereEPIK Dance Company is a fusion dance company specializing in all forms of street and technical dance. This includes the street styles of b-boying (breakdancing), popping, locking, house, waacking, and krumping, and the technical styles of modern contemporary, lyrical and jazz. EPIK is a collection of uniquely gifted dancers, choreographers and teachers who are passionate about dance and love sharing it with others. You will never meet a more eclectic group of individuals, who each bring something special to the table. They come from all walks of life and experiences, and it is evident in the diversity of styles and personalities present in the company. When working with EPIK, there is never a dull moment!

Flamenco del Sol www.azemporium.com, or ACA Roster Page here“Viva Espana: A Journey Through Spain" is our signature program. Participants join us for a vicarious viaje (trip) around various provinces of the country. We change costumes and before each dance, we explain how elements of the costume and dance reflect the characteristics of the people. Our show includes regional Spanish folk dances, classical numbers, as well as flamenco. The educational information interwoven with the dances is entertaining, lighthearted and fun. Whether our participants are kids or kids at heart, we encourage everyone to interact with with jaleo (shouts) to encourage the dancers and palmas (clapping) to keep the rhythm and generate energy. We show how to play castanets and we welcome everyone to join us for a rumba. We have been invited to libraries, schools, senior centers, museums, even military bases. We wish to share our passion for the dance, music and expression of a culture prevalent in the southwest. Ole!
