MASTERPIECES OF ART PROGRAM (MAP) DESCRIPTION

The Masterpieces of Art Program is an exciting volunteer program in Scottsdale public schools.  MAP Art Guides enrich and expand the education of our children through the introduction and discussion of fine art as part of classroom learning.

Art Guides visit the classroom five or six times a year to discuss a fine art reproduction, comparing, contrasting and questioning the children about what they see and think, sometimes doing a small hands-on project.

MAP supplements the visual arts teachers’ curriculum, it does not supplant it.

MAP is not necessarily curriculum based.  It is a humanities approach to the visual arts that attempts to link culture and history with the everyday experiences of the children.  It is the Art Council’s belief that these discussions can be used as a springboard to various subjects by the classroom teacher.

It is because of the dedicated group of Art Guides that the program has prospered, along with the classroom teachers who understand how these presentations enhance the children’s world.

The Arts in Education Council for Scottsdale Schools created the first MAP program in the state of Arizona in 1974.  Since then, MAP has become a valued opportunity for children throughout the state.

The Arts Council’s MAP inventory has over 1,000 reproductions for loan, including paintings, photographs, and sculptures, that are rotated among the participating schools.  A complete list is in the AEC binder and on the AEC website at www.artsined.org.  Each reproduction has a companion packet of information about the art and artist.  For detailed checkout procedures, see the guidelines that follow.

Art Guides are encouraged to go to the free training sessions offered by the Phoenix Art Museum in the fall each year.  Individual schools may also choose to have supplemental training for their schools’ guides.  Find the proposed 09-10 training schedule here.

Getting acquainted with MAP, there are innumerable sources of support and information from current and former volunteers, internet access and local activities.
