AEC Programs

Fine Arts Summer Scholarships:  The AEC seeks donations and fundraises to send SUSD students to band, strings, and visual arts summer camps.  These amazing opportunities would not otherwise be available to these talented and deserving students.
Scholarship applications are being accepted NOW! Deadline for applicants is April 15, 2012- no late applications will be accepted. Download the scholarship application here

Professional Fine Arts Performances:  Professional concerts, plays and dance performances for elementary school students are selected and coordinated by the Arts in Education Council (AEC) to be performed at our schools.  Funding comes from a variety of sources, including schools, Scottsdale League for the Arts, Scottsdale Cultural Council, and local businesses.

High School Master Classes:  The AEC coordinates a program for high school dance, drama, visual arts, band, choral and strings teachers to bring outside arts professionals into their classrooms.  Funding comes from grants and individual donations to the AEC.

High School Fine Arts Competition Fees: Beginning this year, AEC is committing $500 to each of the 5 SUSD high schools to help underwrite fine arts competition fees for high school students.  To access the funds, interested teachers and students must get departmental approval, and complete a requisition form indicating the nature of the competition and how participation aligns with the goals of AEC.  For more information, please contact Francesca Thomas.

Masterpieces of Art:  AEC volunteers discuss visual art masterpieces with students in their general classrooms, integrating art history and perception into everyday life.  Training is provided and the Art Guides do not need to have an art background.  The AEC’s MAP program was the first of its kind in Arizona, and has been the impetus for similar programs in many other school districts and private schools throughout the state.  The Masterpieces of Art Program is funded by participating schools and respective parent groups.  AEC maintains an extensive collection of prints and 3D replicas of art that can be borrowed by any SUSD school representative for use in the classroom. Each reproduction has a companion packet of information about the art and artist.  A map of our location at the Early Childhood Center (ECC) is here located at 11130 E. Cholla St., Scottsdale. Access to the collection is by appointment only, by contacting our curator, Tomi Thomas. A full list of our inventory is available here, this document will be updated periodically as work is conducted on our inventory.

Music Appreciation:  The AEC encourages volunteers and general music teachers to implement the Phoenix Symphony Build’s Music Memory program or programs developed by AEC members.  Training is provided and the Music Guides do not need to have a music background.  Volunteers or general music teachers discuss the music with the students.  These programs are funded by participating schools and respective parent groups.  Materials are available through AEC and can be borrowed by any SUSD school representative.

Artists-in-Residence:  The AEC encourages all schools to have a yearly Artists-in-Residence program, and AEC representatives help select, write grants, and coordinate them.  Funding is provided by the Arizona Commission on the Arts, Scottsdale School District, individual schools, and parent groups.

Recognition Awards:  The AEC annually recognizes an Outstanding Fine Arts Teachers, SUSD Administrator, AEC Volunteer, Community Member and Community Organization.

Instrument Donation: The Scottsdale School District is in need of gently used instruments to rent to younger students in our schools.  If you have a gently used band, strings or orchestra instrument, that your student has outgrown or is no longer playing, please consider donating it for the benefit of another budding musician.  Please contact AEC to find out where you donation might currently be needed. Instruments can be brought to the Ed Center (3811 N. 44th St.).  Donations forms are available for tax purposes.  (Please note that instrument valued over $300 must be accompanied by an appraisal.) Thanks so much for your support of the arts!
